Brecon Beacons hiking weekend - 4-6 October 2024
On the weekend of 4-6 October, nine of us from Girls Alive set out for an adventure in the beautiful Brecon Beacons. The journey to Tyle Morgrug cottage and bunkhouse was a bit tricky, thanks to a Severn bridge closure on Friday, but we arrived safely, ready for the weekend ahead.
Our cozy farm accommodation was the perfect base. We bunked down in dorms, shared stories, and indulged in Seema’s delicious homemade pakoras on the first night. The next day, we tackled Pen-Y-Fan—an impressive 15.15km hike to the highest peak in South Wales, reaching 886 meters. The weather was on our side: cloudy yet dry, with a strong wind at the top that blew the clouds away, revealing stunning views across the Beacons. After the hike, we enjoyed a hearty meal at a local pub in Merthyr Tydfil, then relaxed back at the cottage with card games and laughter.
On Sunday, we took a scenic hike to and behind a waterfall in Penderyn before a smooth journey home. Our neon pink beanies turned plenty of heads along the trails, with many asking, “What’s Girls Alive?”—a fun way to spread the word about our amazing group and make it easy to spot each other on the trail.
Thanks to everyone who organized and led the hikes (Kate D, Cathy C and Kate H) and to Alexa who helped organize but couldn’t make it—you were missed! Here’s to more adventures soon!
